Sambalpur: The first phase of the approved masterplan transformation of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Technology (VSSUT) at Burla in Odisha’s Sambalpur district will see 58 smart classrooms added to the institute by December 2022.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of VSSUT Bansidhar Majhi said that the master plan for development of the institution has already been prepared and work will be carried out in three phases. “While the institute already had 20 smart classrooms, the rest will be developed in the next three months and completed by December. The 20 existing smart classrooms also need some renovation,” Majhi said.

Around Rs 11-Rs 14 lakh will be spent on each classroom with 86 inches smart boards and CCTV surveillance system.

Apart from smart classrooms, some infrastructure development and renovation work will also be carried out, he added.

On September 17, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved the master plan under which Rs 2,000 crore will be invested in phases to create infrastructure to accommodate over 10,000 students in different disciplines.

“We have set a target to develop the institution into a multidisciplinary engineering and research university. The student strength of the institution will be increased from 5,000 to 10,000 within a span of five years. Currently, we offer 11 engineering courses. Under the transformation plan, 24 engineering courses will be offered under seven schools,” Majhi further said.

Currently, the faculty strength at VSSUT will also be increased from 308 to 500. Hostel facilities for 6,700 students will also be created. The government will provide an additional 100 acre of land for further development of the university. At present, the university spreads over 143 acre, sources added.

After completion of the project by 2026, more than 10,000 students can take admission in 24 under-graduate departments of the VSSUT. The student intake capacity of the VSSUT will be increased from the present 2,849 to 10,864.
