Mumbai: The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Odisha and the other 20 states/UTs governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday.
“We introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in several states. I am confident that we will implement the UCC in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029,” Shah said at a press conference in Mumbai.

The UCC seeks to formalise a common set of personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, irrespective of religion.
Besides Odisha, BJP independently governs 14 other states/UTs — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
On the other hand, BJP-led NDA rules 6 states/UTs – Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Puducherry and Sikkim.
Uttarakhand became the first state in India to roll out the UCC on January 27, 2025.
Three more states – Gujarat, Assam and Madhya Pradesh – have passed UCC Bill this year, and are set to implement it soon.
