Bhubaneswar: Proceedings of the Odisha Assembly were disrupted for the second day on Wednesday amid uproar by opposition members over MMDR amendment and school textbook errors.
As the House plunged into turmoil due to pandemonium by opposition Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLAs right from the question hour, the proceedings were adjourned till 4 pm.
As soon as the question hour commenced on the second day of the monsoon session, Congress and BJD legislators trooped into the well of the house and raised slogans, demanding withdrawal of the amended Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
BJD MLAs also raised the issue of alleged mistakes in school textbooks and sought the government’s response on the matter. The regional party has been demanding the resignation of School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond over the issue.
As noisy scenes persisted amid slogan-shouting and placard-waving by opposition members, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi appealed to the protesting legislators to return to their seats and allow the House to function.
As his repeated appeals went unheeded and the noisy protests continued, normal proceedings could not be conducted and the House was adjourned till 4 pm.
