Odisha Assembly Adjourned Twice Amid Chaos, Whistling By Opposition

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly was paralysed on Thursday amid repeated adjournments amid uproarious scenes as opposition BJD and Congress members created ruckus over several issues.

Though the Assembly began the proceedings on a quite note following a proposal to observe silence for a minute as a tribute to former BJD MLA Debaraj Seth who passed away, unruly scenes followed soon.

The House witnessed pandemonium as soon as the question hour proceedings commenced with Congress legislators created chaos with hooting and whistling. The Congress MLAs trooped into the well alleging an alarming rise in crimes against women in the state.

While Health and Family Welfare Mukesh Mahaling was speaking several Congress members took to the podium shouting slogans.

Despite repeated appeals by Speaker Surama Padhy to restore peace, the opposition members resorted to sloganeering, demanding replies from the government on atrocities against women.

Congress members, wearing black armbands, also strongly protested the recent suspension of party MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati.

As noisy scenes persisted, the Speaker found it difficult to conduct business and adjourned the House till 12 noon. Similar scenes were witnessed when the House reassembled and the proceedings were again adjourned till 12.30 pm as the uproar by opposition continued despite repeated requests by the Speaker.
