Ranchi: Dutee Chand created a new national record of 11.22 seconds in Women’s 100m and her state-mate Amiya Kumar Malik won the bragging rights as the fastest man at the 59th National Open Athletics Championship in Ranchi on Friday.
He won the men’s 100m by clocking 10.46 seconds, a hundredth of a second ahead of Malaysia’s Jonathan AnakNyepa.
Amiya had been struggling to find his rhythm the whole season, while Dutee had finished seventh in the third heat of the recent World Athletics Championships by clocking 11.48 seconds, which was well below her season best.
The World University Games champion also bettered her personal best by 0.04 seconds in this championship, thus getting closer to the to 2020 Olympics qualification mark of 11.15 seconds.
Another woman athlete from Odisha Jauna Murmu, representing the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), bagged gold in the 400-metre hurdles event. She had achieved the same feat in the 57th National Open too.
