Ahead of February 8 Delhi elections, Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP), South-East Delhi, Chinmoy Biswal has been removed from his post.
The Election Commission (EC) shunted him on Sunday citing the “ongoing situation” in the area that saw two firing incidents at the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest sites — Shaheen Bagh and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI).
Biswal would now report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Additional DCP (southeast) Kumar Gyanesh has been directed to take charge in the interim.
“Chinmoy Biswal IPS (2008), DCP (South-East) stands relieved from his present post with immediate effect and shall report to MHA. In view of ongoing situation, Commission directs Kumar Gyanesh, DANIPS (1997) shall take charge as DCP (South-East) immediately,” the EC said in a statement.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs/Delhi Commissioner of Police may however immediately send a panel of three names to the EC for posting a suitable officer as the regular DCP (South-East)” it added.
The NDTV in a report said that the poll body was not satisfied with the steps taken by Biswal for the conduct of free and fair elections.
A native of Odisha, Biswal is an alumnus of BJB Autonomous College. He had led the police team during the attack on JMI students.
