Odisha Cabinet Approves Proposal To Lease Out Land For Cancer Hospital On NISER Campus At Jatni

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Cabinet on Friday approved a proposal of Revenue and Disaster Management Department to lease out government land for a Cancer Hospital & Education Centre at Jatni in Khurda district.

The facility will be established by Mumbai-based Tata Memorial Centre, a grant-in-aid institution under the Department of Atomic Energy. “Government land totaling 48.842 acre in mouza Padanpur, Baratota, Bhimapur and Belapada under Jatni Tehsil will be leased out in favour of National Institute of Science Education & Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, on free of all charges basis for setting up Cancer Hospital & Education Centre by Tata Memorial Centre,” an official release said.

In September last year, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, and the Odisha Health and Family Welfare Department for establishment of the state-of-the-art cancer hospital on NISER campus.

It was decided that NISER would give 17 acre land from its campus while the Union ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship would share 13 acres of land available with it near the campus for the project. The state government was then considering giving a patch of land for the centre.

Subsequently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre on the campus through video conferencing, on the occasion of the National Technology Day in May this year.

The facility is expected to be ready in two to three years, sources said, adding that it will not only provide affordable cancer care to the people, but also help the institute conduct clinical and scientific research on cancer.
