New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Senior IAS officer of Odisha cadre Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
The appointments committee of the Cabinet on Thursday approved the appointment of Kanta Pandey as the new SEBI Chairman.
The 1987-batch bureaucrat, who is currently serving as Union Finance, will assume office for an initial tenure of three years. He replaces current SEBI Chairperson, Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure ends on March 1.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Revenue to the post of Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), initially for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the government order stated.
In January, the government invited applications for the position, setting February 17, 2025, as the deadline for submissions.
Pandey, who has done his Master in Arts in Economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh, and MBA from UK, has worked in various capacities in Odisha government and the Union government of India. He had been appointed Union Finance Secretary in September, 2024.
In Odisha, he worked as Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation (OSFC); Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation (OSIC); Collector of Sambalpur district, special secretary, General Administration department, Transport Commissioner, as well as Health Secretary and as Commissioner, Commercial Taxes.
In 2009, Pandey was appointed as Joint Secretary, Planning Commission for five years and subsequently, appointed as Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat for a period of two years. He had served as Principal Secretary, Finance, in Odisha before proceeding on central deputation.
