Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a proposal to name Government Medical College & Hospital, Jajpur, which is expected to become functional from 2024, after Jajati Keshari, a CMO release said on Wednesday.

Jajati Keshari is a famous Somavamsi ruler of ancient Odisha. He had constructed many important temples, including the magnificent Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar. He established ‘Abhinav Jajnagar’, the modern Jajpur, as the capital of his kingdom. “Naming of Jajpur Medical College after Jajati Kesari is a humble tribute to this great historical personality who had enhanced the glory of Odisha,” the release further said.

The medical college has been built at a cost of Rs 526.21 crore over 46 acre. The state government is in the process of applying to National Medical Commission (NMC) for Letter of Permission (LoP) for admission of 100 MBBS students in the medical colleg for the academic session 2024-25, it added.

“After careful consideration, government has been pleased to name the new Government Medical College and Hospital at Jajpur as “Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital, Jajpur,” according to Health Department’s September 11 notification.

Notably, people of Jajpur had requested 5T Secretary V K Pandian, during his recent visit to the district, to name the medical college after the ruler.

With the opening of this institution, the total number of government medical colleges and hospitals in Odisha will go up to 12, producing 1,650 MBBS students each year.
