Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has directed the District Collectors to ensure uniform use of revised English spellings of the names of various places.
All Collectors have been asked to ensure the uniform and consistent use of revised English spellings of place names, in conformity with their Odia pronunciation, across all government offices and institutions in their respective districts.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Aravind Kumar Padhee, has written to all Collectors in this regard.
The Collectors have been instructed to ensure widespread use of the revised spellings on nameplates and signboards of all government offices and institutions in their respective districts.
The government has asked the Collectors to accord the exercise the highest priority, take necessary steps for its complete implementation and submit compliance reports within a week.
The Odisha Government had issued a Gazette notification on June 22, 2026, prescribing a one-month deadline for government offices and institutions to implement the revised spellings on their signboards. Private and non-government institutions were given six months to adopt the changes.
Official sources said the fresh directive was issued after the government noticed some government offices were still using the old English spellings of certain places on their signboards.
The government noted continued use of old spellings could create inconsistencies in official nomenclature and undermine the objective of the Cabinet decision. The Collectors have, therefore, been asked to review the signboards of all government offices, institutions and other government establishments in their respective districts.
The Collectors have also been advised to facilitate and encourage private and non-government institutions to adopt the revised spellings within the stipulated timeframe and ensure their wider use.
The Department has accorded top priority to the implementation of the decision. All Collectors have been directed to take necessary action and submit a compliance report within one week indicating the status of implementation in their respective districts.
