Puri: In a major cyber security drive during the Rath Yatra, the Cyber Crime Unit of the CID, Crime Branch of Odisha Police has blocked 121 fake hotel booking websites and 33 fraudulent hotel webpages to safeguard lakhs of devotees visiting Puri from online frauds.
The special preventive operation, conducted between June 1 and July 18, focused on identifying and taking action against fake hotel booking portals, fraudulent travel websites and misleading online content targeting pilgrims planning their visit to the annual festival.
Officials said the Cyber Crime Unit also removed or blocked 19 misleading online contents related to Rath Yatra that could potentially deceive devotees.
Working in coordination with service providers, officials also blocked 893 mobile numbers and 793 IMEI numbers allegedly linked to customer care fraud, fake hotel bookings, e-commerce scams and other cyber offences targeting pilgrims.
The Crime Branch said these proactive measures have played a key role in ensuring a safer and hassle-free Rath Yatra by preventing financial fraud and cybercrime.
The Odisha Police have urged devotees to book hotels, guest houses and travel services only through official websites or verified booking platforms.
Devotees have also been advised to avoid clicking on hotel booking links received through SMS, WhatsApp or social media. They have been advised to verify the authenticity of websites, contact numbers and payment details before making online transactions. They should also stay away from offers promising unusually cheap hotel rooms, VIP darshan tickets or special passes.
Additionally, police have stressed that people should never share OTPs, UPI PINs, bank account details or debit/credit card information with anyone.
In case of any cyber fraud, victims have been advised to immediately call the National Cyber Helpline (1930), file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, or contact the nearest police station for prompt assistance.
