Berhampur: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police on Monday filed a chargesheet in the court of Berhampur Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) in connection with gang rape of a college student at Gopalpur beach last month.
As per police sources, the Crime Branch filed a 574-page chargesheet in the court.
The incident took place on the night of June 15 when the college student was allegedly gang raped by ten persons on Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district.
The survivor had gone to the beach along with a male friend in the evening. The incident took place when they were sitting at an isolated place on the beach. The perpetrators after overpowering her friend sexually assaulted her.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and drew sharp criticism from opposition parties condemning the BJP-led government over the deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha.
Police were able to arrest all ten accused, including four minors, within 36 hours.
In view of the gravity of the case, it was red-flagged and the investigation was conducted by the Crime Branch’s CAW team.
