Baripada: Tension prevailed at Kaptipada Community Health Centre (CHC) in Mayurbhanj district after a patient was administered an expired saline on Sunday.
Police later detained the on-duty doctor, Umakant Baske, for interrogation after the patient’s family accused him of medical negligence.
According to sources, Narendra Mohanty of Dundaria village in the district was admitted to the CHC on Sunday. He was suffering from diarrhoea. Following a check-up, he was administered a saline, which had expired in October 2019.
Irked over incident, family members of the patient created a ruckus in the hospital and gheraoed the doctor.
Baske refuted the allegation and passed on the buck to the nurse. He said it was not possible on his part to look into everything and the nurse on duty should check the saline before administering it to the patient.
A few other patients were reportedly also administered expired saline.
Meanwhile, patients and their attendants have demanded that all medicines in the storeroom of the CHC should be checked for their expiry date.
