Berhampur: Police here on Sunday claimed to have cracked the August 18 ATM cash van hijack case. Three persons, including the van driver, have been detained.
According to police sources, the driver, identified as Asish Diggal, along with his two associates had hijacked the cash van and looted the money. While Diggal has confessed to the crime, Rs 21 lakh have been seized from the accused, two among who were nabbed from Phulbani.
Police will give details of the incident at a press briefing later in the evening, the sources added.
Notably, the ATM Cash van loaded with Rs 24 lakh was allegdely hijacked near an ATM under Bada Bazar police limits. The driver had then claimed that two persons forced him to drive at gunpoint and later drugged him at an unknown location.
The incident took place when the van, belonging to cash logistics firm AGS Transact Technologies Ltd, was on its way to load cash in ATMs. The other staff, who found the vehicle missing from spot after coming out of the kiosk, had reported the matter to police, which then traced the vehcile to Golanthara Girisola, bordering Andhra Pradesh. The driver was found in an unconscious state and the cash was missing.
