Bhubaneswar: Gopalpur MLA Pradeep Panigrahi, who is the BJP MP candidate from Berhampur, was shifted to AIIM-Bhubaneswar after he sustained grievous injuries in an alleged scuffle with an MLA candidate after the end of polling in Gosani Nuagaon area here on Monday.
According to sources, former Berhampur mayor Siba Shankar Das, who is contesting as an independent from Berhampur Assembly seat, allegedly pushed and punched Panigrahi near a booth at Gosani Nuagaon. The BJP MP candidate sustained bleeding injuries on his right shoulder and complained of chest pain. He was initially rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and later shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, for further treatment.
The sources further said that the incident took place while the election party was preparing to leave and the BJP agents noticed that the EVMs were not sealed. Following which, Panigrahi rushed to the spot with his supports. Gosain Nuagaon IIC Smrutirekha Pradhan and other police offers also reached the spot. During the discussion, Das arrived and allegedly assaulted Panigrahi, leading to a scuffle.
Das’ supporters later created a ruckus over his detention at Gosani Nuagaon police station, alleging rigging. Tension prevailed on the premises of the police station as they staged a sit-in and demanded his immediate release.
The BJD, on the other hand, has moved the Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha, alleging attack on its three supporters by some BJP workers.
