Odisha ‘Fake’ Doctor With 17 ‘Highly-Qualified’ Wives Is A Matric Fail!

Bhubaneswar: The fake doctor, who conned 17 women into marriage and swindled their riches, is a matric fail, Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash informed on Thursday.

This was revealed by the relatives of Bidhu Prakash Swain alias Ramesh Swain during the probe, following his arrest on Monday.

The 54-year-old man from Odisha’s Kendrapada district also ran two clinics in Cuttack and Badamba under the franchise of ‘Lifescan’. “He hadn’t paid salaries to the employees for months,” the DCP said.

Commissionerate Police has sought documents from the company to ascertain the circumstances under which he got permission for the clinics, he said.

The DCP further informed that the accused was in touch with more women and was planning to walk down the aisle a few more times.

“All types of allegations against him will be probed thoroughly,” he said, adding that police will seek the remand of Swain for further investigation and questioning.

While police initially had information about 14 wives from seven states, 3 more women with whom Swain had tied the knot were later identified. They too were highly qualified and professionally established in higher positions like his other 14 wives.

He targetted his victims through matrimonial sites by posing as a doctor and a senior Central government official, married and swindled their money before abandoning them.

Among his victims were an assistant commandant of Indo-Tibetan Border Police, a deputy general manager in National Insurance Company Limited, a lawyer in Delhi High Court, five teachers, a doctor in Assam, a CA in Chhattisgarh and a senior official of Kerala government.

It was a complaint by his seventh wife that led to his arrest on Monday. “We met on a matrimonial website. After our wedding, we stayed in Bhubaneswar. After a few days, he fled with the money and jewellery. Then I saw that he had posted a photo on the website, again looking for a partner. I then filed an FIR,” she stated in her complaint lodged in July 2021.

Among his victims were an assistant commandant of Indo-Tibetan Border Police, a deputy general manager in National Insurance Company Limited, a lawyer in Delhi High Court and five teachers.

He travelled across the country seeking such matches and spent most of his time with one of his wives at Guwahati, Assam, police said.

This apart, he has duped Rs 18 lakh from aspirants seeking MBBS admission.

Swain was earlier arrested in Hyderabad and Ernakulam, Kerala, for fraud and cheating.
