Odisha Family Donates Kidneys, Liver Of 1-Year-Old Son

Bhubaneswar: In a display of extraordinary compassion, family members of a year-old boy from Odisha’s Rourkela donated organs of their brain-dead child. Ashok Lenka and Pratibha Nayak from the steel city took the difficult decision following the death of their son, Janmesh.

As per information, Janmesh was undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar for severe health complications when doctors declared him brain dead. Despite prolonged efforts, he could not be saved. After all efforts failed, the boy’s family took the selfless decision to donate his organs.

After the boy’s parents agreed to donate his organs to help others in need, his kidneys were matched with patients in AIIMS Bhubaneswar while his liver was transported to AIIMS Delhi. This generous step not only provided a lifeline to patients awaiting transplants but also highlights the significance of organ donation, doctors said.

Sources said the last rites of the deceased boy were performed at Jagamara in Bhubaneswar, while a guard of honour was given on behalf of the state government as per the set practice.

The step taken by the family serves as a reminder of how the generosity of organ donation can bring hope and life to others, reflecting a deep-seated cultural value of giving within the Indian context.

Boy’s father Ashok Lenka said the child could not be saved despite best efforts by the doctors as he turned brain-dead. However, he is alive again by donating his kidney and liver. “We decided to donate both his organs in the hope that his organs could save someone’s life,” he said.

Voicing similar expressions, his wife Pratibha said it was a very hard decision for the family members, but the vital organs were donated .so that some other person can get a new lease of life.
