Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC emerged Hero Super Cup champions by beating Bengaluru FC 2-1 in the final match on Tuesday.
In the thrilling match for the prestigious title, played at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode of Kerala, Odisha FC’s doubles strikes from Diego Mauricio gave the team the lead at half time. The Juggernauts held on until the 80th minute when Bengaluru’s Sunil Chhetri scored from the penalty spot on. But it was too little too late.
It is Odisha’s first piece of silverware in their history and books them a place in the AFC Cup playoffs.
In the semifinal played on Saturday, Odisha FC outplayed NorthEast United 3-1 at Manjeri to book their encounter with Bengaluru FC in the final.
Bengaluru FC had won the first edition of the Hero Super Cup in 2018. This season, they finished as runners-up in the Indian Super League after losing to ATK Mohun Bagan in the final.
