Bhubaneswar: The water level in Hirakud dam, currently passing through its peak flood phase, was 626.12 ft at 8 pm on Wednesday and has been steady at that level, according to media reports. The water level of the dam was 626.17 ft at 6 pm on Wednesday.
At 8 pm on Wednesday, the dam was receiving 5.80 lakh cusecs water from upstream and discharging 6.77 lakh cusecs through 40 sluice gates downstream.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Jena said 40 gates of Hirakud dam will remain open till Thursday evening.
The water level at Mundali in Cuttack has also started receding. The peak of the flood is beginning to decline in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Puri. However, we need to remain alert on Wednesday night, Jena said.
Engineer-in-Chief (Water Resources) Bijay Mishra said the situation is being monitored closely.
Even if there is heavy rain on August 19 and 20, the maximum water flow through Mundali will be 8.50 lakh cusec, he said.
