Odisha Fuels Country’s Active COVID Tally At 2nd Spot; This Year’s Toll Rises To 9

Bhubaneswar: Two day after logging COVID cases below 300, Odisha saw 329 of 7,309 samples testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, according to data shared by the state health department.

The state also confirmed one more death, taking the toll to nine. The latest victim has been identified as 48-year-old man of Sambalpur district, who was also suffering from diabetes mellitus and hypertension.

The test positive rate (TPR) has also dropped to 4.5% against 5.14% the previous day (May 2) when 291 fresh infections were reported. The state has been witnessing a decline in the COVID graph since April 28 when the highest 573 cases were detected. The cases dropped to 516 on April 29 and then to 388 on April 30 while 279 cases were reported on May 1.

Despite the declining TPR and cases, Odisha with 4,369 cases continues to be among top-three states fuelling the nation’s active tally. Kerala tops the list with 9,014 cases while Maharashtra is at the third spot with 3,351 cases.

Most of the active cases in Odisha are from Sundargarh, Cuttack, Nabarangpur, Sambalpur and Nuapada districts.

Odisha has, so far, registered 9,072 cases in the current wave, which started on March 17. A total of 42 patients have been hospitalised and rest undergoing treatment in home isolation.

The health authorities said that the daily caseload will drop further by mid-May.
