Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Friday approved the proposal of Odisha State Commission for Backward Classes (OSCBC) to conduct a survey of socio-economic conditions of the backward classes.
In an official notification, the ST & SC Development M&BCW department requested the chairperson of OSCBC to take appropriate steps for conducting the social and economic conditions of the people belonging to backward classes in the state.
It may be noted that the state government formed the OSCBC in February last year after National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) pulled up the government for its apathy towards backward communities and delay in appointing chairperson of the commission.
The latest order has raised the speculation that the government may introduce quota for backward classes of the society on pro rata basis. It may lead to reservation politics intensifying during future elections.
