Bhubaneswar: With Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) killing over 57,000 cattle across the country, the Odisha government on Saturday opened a control room to help the farmers tackle the disease.
Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Ranendra Pratap Swain opened the control room. The control room located in the ground floor of the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences will provide consultation services to the farmers. They can dial 0671-2414310 or reach out to the government through the mobile number 7205598125 in the control room.
In a Twitter post, the minister requested the people of 14 border districts to consult the government authorities in case of any outbreak of the disease.
It may be noted that lumpy skin disease, a viral infection that affects cattle and is highly contagious, has affected over 15.21 lakh cattle in the country. Cases have been reported from at least seven states including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.
The Centre had advised the states to make efforts on the ground level to isolate animals and prevent the disease from spreading. The infection is spreading rapidly in Rajasthan and Gujarat where state governments have created control rooms in districts to monitor and indulge in effective prevention strategies. In August alone, over 3,000 cattle died in these two states due to the viral infection, according to reports.
