Rourkela: The construction work of the hockey stadium in Rourkela will be started in April and completed in 2022, said chief secretary Suresh Mohapatra during a visit to the city on Tuesday.

Speaking to mediapersons after the reviewing the project along with 5T secretary VK Pandian, Mohapatra said besides the stadium, construction of parking and other infrastructure like accommodation facilities for the players will also begin in the same month.

The stadium will have facilities like flood light, practice pitch, gym, hydro therapy, media centre and those for the spectators.

Proposed to be the country’s biggest hockey stadium, it will come up on 15 acre of land in Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) campus. It will have a sitting capacity of 20,000.

In December last year, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced the construction of the stadium in Rourkela which will host the Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 along with Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
