Cuttack: The Odisha government has moved the Orissa High Court, seeking confirmation of the death sentence awarded to five persons by a trial court in connection with the murder of ex-block chairman and Congress leader Ramachandra Behera in 2019.
The government has sought validation of the HC in the capital punishment in accordance with the law.
On March 6, the court of additional sessions judge in Keonjhar’s Anandpur awarded death sentence to Sanjeev Kumar Prusty, Ajit Kumar Prusty, Aruna Prusty, Alekha Prusty and Purna Chandra Boitei while terming it as “a rarest of rare case”.
They had brutally murdered Behera in Ghasipura on March 25, 2019, in front of his daughter and also chopped off a hand and lower limbs of the deceased and displayed the body parts to create fear among the public.
