Odisha Govt Seeks Report On Actions Against Private Schools Not Having Recognition

Bhubaneswar: The state government has sought action taken report on the private schools running without certificate of recognition (COR) from the district education officers (DEOs).

In a letter to the DEOs, Joint Director of Elementary Education said, “You have been requested to issue draft show cause notice and take appropriate action against the private schools running without COR and furnish the report for submission to government. Hence, you are requested to furnish the report immediately for further action.”

The school and Mass Education department had made it mandatory for private elementary schools to obtain COR in accordance with the Right of Children to free and compulsory Education Act, 2009 and the Odisha Right of Children to free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2010.

As per the rules, the schools have to reserve 25 per cent of its strength for admission of students belonging to weaker sections and disadvantaged under RTE Act, 2009. In case of violation of the conditions of COR, the DEOs can withdraw the recognition certificate.

Any school set up without COR is liable to a fine upto Rs one lakh and in case of continuing contraventions, Rs 10,000 per day.
