Odisha Govt Sounds Minor To Medium Flood Alert In Mahanadi

Bhubaneswar: Hours after ruling out flood-like situation in Odisha, the state government sounded minor to medium flood alert in Mahanadi river and its tributaries, on Sunday evening.

In a statement to the media, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Bishnupada Sethy said following heavy rain in the upper catchments, there has been a steady rise in the water level of Mahanadi river and its tributaries.
“The inflow of Mahanadi water from Khairmal barrage was 6.8 lakh cusecs per second by 6 pm. Taking note of the inflow volume of the floodwater, it is expected to go up to 7.5 lakh-8 lakh cusecs at Mundali by Monday morning,” he added.
Talking about the rainfall, the SRC said 622 mm rainfall in Burla in the last 24 hours is an all-time record in the state. Odisha had received the highest of 581.9 mm in 1982.
He further said that adequate measures are being taken to tackle a possible flood situation.
The collectors of the riverside districts have been asked to alert the people about the situation and shift those living near the river embankment to safer places. Besides, the ODRAF and Fire units have been deployed in the vulnerable areas for rescue operations, Sethy informed.
