Bhubaneswar: With incessant rain triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal causing damage to paddy in several parts of Odisha, the state government on Saturday assured the farmers that they will be given compensation for the loss.
Announcing this, Cooperation Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta said that the sate government will take necessary steps to help the farmers who face loss due to the current spell of rain caused by depression.
The state government will provide compensation if the paddy gets affected because of the rain continuing since Friday, the Minister told reporters.
He said arrangement has been made for covering the crops at Mandis. Therefore, the possibility of paddy getting damaged at Mandis is minimal. However, the crops may get sprouted due to rain, he said.
He assured the farmers that paddy will be procured at mandis after drying up when the rain subsides.

It may be noted that rainfall of varied intensity has been lashing many parts of Odisha as the well-marked low-pressure area has further intensified into depression over the Bay of Bengal.
While Khurda recorded the highest amount of rainfall of 75 mm followed by Jagatsinghpur with 61.2 mm by 8.30 am today, Paradip received 61.1 mm rain. The quantum of rain was recorded 51.6 mm in Bhubaneswar and 58.6 mm in Gopalpur in past 24 hours.
