Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to hand over the management of the Govardhan Mutt in Puri to the Shankaracharya.
A proposal to this effect was approved by the State Cabinet at a meeting here on Monday presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the Lok Seva Bhawan.
Considering the pre-eminence and unique place occupied by the Govardhan Mutt and the Shankaracharya among the Hindu religious institutions of the state and the long-pending requests received from different quarters including from the Govardhan Mutt, the Cabinet approved the proposal to amend the Odisha Hindu Religious Endowments Act, 1951 by excluding the Math from the purview of the said Act.
The proposed amendment shall upkeep the religious pre-eminence and importance of the holy institution.
