Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Crime Branch on Sunday forwarded the cashier of Odisha Gramya Bank, Pahanga branch in Cuttack’s Niali, Bansidhar Majhi, to court on charges of embezzling Rs 1.15 crore from depositors’ accounts.

He was apprehended from Bhawanipatana town in Kalahandi the previous day.  The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by Regional Manager of Odisha Gramya Bank in Cuttack Jatindra Nath Sarangi, an EOW release said.

Investigation revealed that Majhi during his tenure as cashier of Odisha Gramya Bank, Pahanga Branch from May 2021 to May 2022 and at Binishpur branch from May 20, 2022, to May 23, 2022, misappropriated public money by not depositing the cash received from the customers in their respective accounts despite issuing the receipt counter foil to them.

Further, he was illegally diverting the money from the accounts of the SHG Groups to his personal and other accounts as well and was misappropriating the same. He has also issued the ATM in respect of the accounts of the bank customers without their knowledge and was using the same for the banking transaction from the said accounts and thereby misappropriating the customers’ money deposited with the bank.

“The total amount misappropriated by the accused comes to be around Rs.1.15 crores. The accused in conspiracy with others has forged the bank documents and was using those as genuine,” it further stated.

He had been absconding after his suspension. Incriminating materials like ATM cards of customers have been seized from his possession, the release added.
