Sundargarh: At least 32 girls of a government school hostel fell ill reportedly due to severe heatwave conditions in Koida area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
According to sources, as many as 32 girl students of the school hostel at Soyamba have been admitted to K. Balanga Hospital after they complained of fever, nausea and stomach pain.
While 25 students were admitted to the hospital on Wednesday night, seven others were hospitalised on Thursday morning with complaints of fever, stomach ache and vomiting.
All the girls are stable and undergoing treatment, doctors at the hospital said. The students were suspected to have fallen sick due to the severe heatwave sweeping the region. The girls apparently failed to take proper food and water in order to cope with the severe heat conditions, they said.
It may be noted here that in view of prevailing heatwave conditions, the Odisha government has directed preponing the summer vacation in all schools across the state. All schools — government, private and aided — up to Class XII will be closed from April 21.
The state government had earlier shut schools for five days (April 12 to 16) and again for two days (April 19 to 20) in view of the scorching heat.
