Odisha Home To 710 Dolphins, Population Boom In Rajnagar Division

Bhubaneswar: The latest dolphin census conducted in Odisha reveals a thriving community of these majestic marine mammals across various wildlife divisions in the state.

The census documented a total of 710 dolphins across Odisha, marking a significant milestone in marine conservation. The Irrawaddy Dolphin, with a count of 188, and the Humpback Dolphin, with 498 individuals, emerged as the most populous species.

As per the reports released after the census operation that began in January, the Rajnagar forest division recorded the highest dolphin population at 505, followed by 174 in Chilika Lake. In addition, smaller populations were documented in Berhampur (13), Puri (7), Balasore (7), and Bhadrak (4).

Species-wise, humpback dolphins dominate with 498 individuals, followed by 188 Irrawaddy, 16 bottlenose, and 8 spinner dolphins.

Environmentalists and wildlife enthusiasts are elated with the findings. The increase in dolphin population is a positive indicator of the health of our marine ecosystems. It reflects the success of our conservation efforts, said a marine biologist.

While the census results are promising, experts stress the need for continuous efforts to protect these species and their habitats. They want the state government to implement stricter regulations and enhance conservation measures for sustained growth of the dolphin population.
