Odisha Launches ‘Secure Fishing’ App; Know How It Works

Bhubaneswar: A ‘Secure Fishing’ app to empower the fisher-folks by providing real-time information has been launched by Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (FARD) department of the Odisha government and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in India.

FARD Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain said the application seeks to empower the fishermen by providing real-time information, insights and analytics.  The app will allow them to access critical and near real-time tailored climate and ocean state information services which would reduce fishers’ vulnerabilities, increases their income and help to achieve their food security.

The web-based dashboard will also help officials of the department to track various activities in the fishery sector, he added.

“It is a fact that climate variability is adding further uncertainties to the nutritional and food security challenges for fisher folks. This is a strategic partnership that will directly contribute to strengthening resilience using knowledge and technology while securing a livelihood,” country director for WFP in India Bishow Parajuli said.

It is being implemented as a pilot in Paradip and will subsequently be extended to the marine fishers in the state, the sources said.
