Bhawanipatna: In a proverbial case of ’till life and death do us apart’, a 65-year-old man died by jumping into the burning funeral pyre of his 60-year-old wife.
The loss of a lifelong partner and fear of surviving alone can often cause a lot of distress and this is what probably led Nilamani to jump into the funeral pyre of his wife Raibati.
The incident took place in Sialajodi village under the Kegaon police limits of Kalahandi district on Tuesday.
Raibati Sabar passed away after suffering a heart attack. Her husband and four sons along with other relatives took her mortal remains to the village crematorium for the last rites. After completing the customary funeral rituals, Raibati was laid to rest on the pyre. As the family members were on their way home from the crematorium, Nilamani took everyone by surprise by darting back and jumped into the pyre leaving no time for others to react.
By the time the family members swung into action, the strong blaze had consumed Nilamani and he died.
