Bhubaneswar: A man and his mother were arrested on Thursday for the alleged murder of his two sons, who were found hanging inside a house at Dhanchangada village under Fatehgarh police limits in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Monday.
The deceased children Akash Mohanty and Bikash Mohanty were aged 14 and nine respectively.
Initially, their father, Prakash Mohanty (40), and grandmother, Souri Mohanty (68), claimed the children took their own lives for unknown reasons. It was suspected that they were upset with his remarriage plans. Prakash had received a proposal on Sunday for his second marriage.
However, the uncle of the children lodged a complaint with police as he suspected that Prakash killed the boys as he intended to remarry. His wife Kuma Nayak had allegedly suicide about two and a half years ago over a family dispute.
“Prakash and his mother allegedly asphyxiated and then strangulated the children to death while they were sleeping. They attempted to stage the murders as suicides by hanging the bodies from the ceiling beam using sarees tied around their necks,” Nayagarh SP, S Susree told TOI.
