Balasore: In a shocking incident, a man allegedly attacked his estranged wife with a knife and slit her throat in full public view at Pathan Mohalla under Balasore Town police limits on Thursday afternoon.
The accused has been identified as Sheikh Amjad, a resident of Buxi Bazaar in Cuttack.
According to sources, Amjad had come to meet his wife, who lived separately due ongoing marital discord. They engaged in a conversation along the road, which soon escalated into a heated argument and Amjad allegedly pulled a sharp knife from his pant pocket and slit the woman’s throat.
Bystanders immediately intervened, subduing Amjad and handing him over to police.
The injured was rushed to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) and then referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where she remains in critical condition.
The incident, which took place in broad daylight, was captured on camera.
Investigations revealed that the couple had a strained relationship, and the woman lived in rented accommodation. Amjad has been detained for questioning to ascertain the circumstances which escalated the dispute into this brutal attack.
Last night also saw a woman being beheaded by her husband at Chakuapal village under Raibania police limits in the district.
The deceased has been identified as Jayanti.
According to sources, the accused, Chandra Mohan Patra, struck her with a sharp weapon, completely severing her head from her body, after a heated argument over a domestic issue. Jayanti died on the spot.
While police have seized the body for postmortem, a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused, who fled soon after committing the crime.
