Odisha May See Slight Decrease In Rain Intensity In Next 3 Days; Orange Alert For 4 Dists Today

Bhubaneswar: With heavy rain lashing several parts of Odisha, Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahu on Friday held a review meeting and directed district collectors to keep a close watch on vulnerable pockets.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places in districts of Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Balangir till 8.30 am on Saturday. Heavy rain is also likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur and Balasore.

The MeT office has also forecast moderate rain/thundershower with one or two intense/heavy spell of rain in some districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Dhenkanal and Angul till 4.45 pm. Light to moderate rain/thundershower accompanied by lightning may also affect some places in Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Bargarh, Sambalpur and Gajapati during this period.

There is no further orange warning and the intensity of rain is likely to decrease in the next 3 days. Yellow warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has again been issued for one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri on July 25. Heavy rain may also occur at some places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Jagatsinghpur and Khurda on this day.

According to the midday bulletin, the low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining Odisha coast now lies over south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining northwest & westcentral Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 2 days. The monsoon trough now passes through Jaisalmer, Kota, Raisen,Chhindwara, Durg, centre of the low pressure area over south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh and thence east-southeastwards to Eastcentral Bay of Bengal.

The IMD also informed about the possibility of a fresh low pressure area over Northwest & adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal around July 24, which may bring more rains for Odisha.

Notably,  Odisha recorded an average rainfall of 16.2 mm in the last 24 hours. Highest of 153.3 mm was recorded in Nayagarh block of Nayagarh district. Two blocks – Bolagarh (128 mm) in  Khurda district and Nayagarh (153.3) in Nayagarh district saw more than 100 mm rainfall.

“Seasonal cumulative rainfall realised from June 1 to July 21 is 372.1 mm against its normal value of  434.1 mm. During the period; 13 districts were deficient, 3 in excess &  rest 14 districts were in the normal category,” the weather agency tweeted.
