New Delhi: Chandrani Murmu, the BJD MP from Keonjhar who created history by becoming the youngest Member of Parliament, on Thursday asked the Centre to set up a steel plant in her constituency.
In her maiden speech in the 17th Lok Sabha, the MP first wished all members on the auspicious occasion of Rath Yatra. She then proceeded to say that her constituency is rich in natural resources and iron ore is exported from there, benefiting the Centre financially. “My constituency is inhabited mostly by tribals, who sustain themselves by selling forest produce. However, they are forced to migrate to other districts and state due to mining activities. My constituency is ideal for setting up a steel plant as it has abundant raw materials,” said the 26-year-old MP.
A steel plant on the lines of Rourkela Steel Plant set up by the Centre in her constituency will open up job opportunities, she added.
The B Tech graduate addressed the House in Hindi and hoped that she had put across her demand to the Centre and the Minister concerned through the Speaker.
After winning the election by defeating two-time BJP MP Ananta Nayak by a margin of 66,203 votes, Murmu has said that her main priorities were to educate people in the region, establish a new railway line between Keonjhar and Bhubaneshwar, and set up a steel plant.
