Bhubaneswar: The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) on Tuesday sought a report from the DFO after a notice from National Green Tribunal (NGT) over alleged encroachment of 100 acres forest land and establishment of a private colony using government funds in Motu area of Odisha’s Malkangiri district.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the issue on basis of September 30 news report, the green panel had sought clarification from the PCCF and Malkangiri Collector on the unauthorised construction of roads, buildings, and wire fencing on the encroached forest land.
It was alleged that these infrastructure projects to establish a settlement named Islam Nagar were funded through various government schemes, including Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Excavation of large ponds, warehouses and installation of transformers also indicated extensive use of state resources.
They were asked file their response/reply by way of affidavit before the Eastern Zonal Bench of the Tribunal at least one week before the next date of hearing on December 3.
Last month, the issue had kicked off a political storm in the state with the BJP expressing shock over alleged renaming of Baribancha village as Islam Nagar with illegal buildings, warehouses, roads and ponds. It accused Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders of being involved in the unlawful use of government funds and sought stringent action against them.
