Jagatsinghpur: A routine anti-narcotics operation in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district turned violent late Saturday night when a suspected drug syndicate allegedly attempted to run over a police team near College Chhak, leaving a constable critically injured.
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding the movement of narcotics traffickers in the area, a police team attempted to halt a speeding vehicle during night patrol for inspection. Instead of stopping, the driver deliberately ploughed into the cops. Police constable Nityananda Senapati was struck by the vehicle and sustained severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to the Jagatsinghpur District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
Following the attack, police launched a swift tactical operation and successfully apprehended two key suspects, identified as Vicky Parija and Jacky Parija. Both individuals were earlier involved in regional drug trafficking networks and were central figures in a massive narcotics bust roughly a year ago that netted nearly ₹3 crore worth of illicit substances. While the Parija brothers were taken into custody, at least three other accomplices managed to escape into the darkness.
Jagatsinghpur police have registered a case charging the suspects with attempted murder, assault on a public servant performing official duties, and relevant sections under narcotics legislation. Special police squads are currently conducting raids across neighbouring districts to trace the absconding suspects and uncover the broader operations of the syndicate, sources added.
