Bhubaneswar: An Inspector of Police has been arrested on charges of sexually exploiting a woman Sub-Inspector (SI) for several years on false promise of marriage in Odisha.
The accused has been identified as Yoshobant Acharya who had joined the state police in 2017. He had been promoted to the rank of Inspector In-Charge (IIC) recently and posted in Kalahandi, sources said.
Acharya was taken into custody based on a complaint lodged by the female police officer. It was alleged that Acharya had developed an intimate relationship with the woman SI around eight years ago. He had reportedly placed a proposal before her for marriage several years ago.
On the assurance of marriage, the Inspector had allegedly kept physical intimacy with the woman for the first time when she was posted at Kendrapada Town Police Station in 2018.
As per the complaint, Acharya was in live-in relationship with the woman SI for the last around seven years. He had been sexually exploiting the woman during her posting in Ganjam, Gajapati and also in Bhubaneswar. Acharya even allegedly forced her to go for an abortion after she was found pregnant, police said.
The woman realised that she was being cheated all these years after she came to know that Acharya is married and also has a son from his wife.
The woman SI then lodged a complaint at the Mahila Police Station in the capital city here. Taking the issue seriously, the Mahila Police arrested Acharya on charges of raping the woman SI. Further investigation is in progress.
