Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police, Odisha has written to the state government seeking dedicated COVID-19 care facilities for 6,000 policemen on duty across Cuttack and Bhubaneswar amid the lockdown to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
With the rise in the number of infections reported among policemen in Mumbai, the police department here does not want to compromise on the safety of the cops.
Several police officers of the state reportedly interacted with Mumbai Police to know the actual reasons for the spread and take timely precautions.
“We wanted to gain first-hand information from Mumbai police about the reasons behind the alarming spread of COVID-19 among policemen. We held a video conference with Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (admin) Nawal Bajaj. He suggested that we should set up our own COVID-19 care facilities. But we have already moved the government for it,” Commissioner of Police Sudhanshu Sarangi was quoted as saying by TOI.
The department is taking necessary steps like deployment of medical officers, timely tests of police officers, provision of infra-red thermometers at every police station, RT-PCR Test for police personnel engaged in duty at COVID-19 hospitals followed by regular sanitisation, among others to stop the community transmission of the illness to its police officers, Sarangi added.
Till now, no police personnel in the state has tested positive for coronavirus.
