Bhubaneswar: Surprise raids were conducted in Sambalpur and Bargarh jails early morning on Friday leading to recovery of several objectionable items like pills, cigarettes, and other form of intoxicants, said sources.
The raids started at 3:30 am in Sambalpur jail during which all 22 wards were thoroughly searched in the presence of local Magistrate and senior police officials.
The raiding team comprised of 7 inspectors, 2 SDPOs, 4 platoons force, and an additional SP. Senior officials suspect involvement of some jail staff facilitating entry of intoxicants into the prison, said sources.
Similarly, at 5 am raids were carried out in Bargarh Jail. The raid took place in the presence of 14 officers with 2 platoon forces, led by Bargarh SP Prahlad Sahai Meena.
Apart from intoxicants, some medicines and cash were also recovered from the premises, sources added.
Senior police officials said action will be initiated and jail staff will be questioned over recovery of objectionable items.
