Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police will beef up security at all major railway stations in the state for the safety of the passengers.
This was discussed at the railway safety meeting chaired by Director General of Police (DGP) BK Sharma at his camp office in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
Among others, Director General (Intelligence) Sunil Roy, ADG (Railways) Pranabindu Acharya and senior railway officials were present.
After the meeting, the DGP told the media that railway authorities will take steps to adequately light up the small stations that have no lighting arrangements. Besides, baggage scanners will be put up at the entry and exit points at each railway station and police will keep a close watch on hawkers and vendors.
Talking about the security measures in Maoist-hit districts, Sharma said railway tracks in these districts will be under scanner round-the-clock. Apart from this, the slums near the railway tracks will also be watched.
The DGP informed that the number of security personnel to be deployed for each express and passenger train was also discussed at the meeting.
The ADG (Railways) said in the initial phase, security will be beefed up at five major railway stations in accordance with the Centre’s integrated security scheme and priority will be given on the safety and security of passengers.
“It was decided at the meeting that all railway stations will have to obtain fire safety certificates from the State Fire Services department. Apart from this, steps will be taken to install CCTV cameras to ensure total coverage of the railway station area,” he added.
He also said that there will be a mandatory provision for all railway stations to have a display board to provide information to the passengers about train timings.
