Cuttack: The most aggressive dog breed, Rottweiler, will now be used for anti-Maoist operations and crime-related investigations in Odisha.

The Crime Branch recently got three Rottweilers and it is also first time in India that any state police will use this breed of dogs.

Notably, the three Rottweilers are being trained by an inspector-level police officer in the police field at Buxi Bazaar in Cuttack.

However, they are yet to be assigned any specific department or task. It will be decided after the two-month-long first phase training, sources said.

According to media reports, 53 dogs, including Alsatian, Doberman, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever, were recently inducted in ‘K9 squad’ (dog squad) of Crime Branch in four departments – Tracking, Narcotic, Explosive, and Search and Rescue.

The three Rottweilers have been procured from a KCI registered organisation for around Rs 1 lakh. The German Rottweiler and American Rottweiler are now available in India.

Rottweilers were once kept as pets in Germany. They were also used for transporting goods from one place to another. However, this breed of dogs were later banned in Spain, Italy, Romania and France because of their aggressive traits.

Popularly known as ‘Killer Dog’, they man the borders of India.

Odisha police can achieve great success in anti-Maoist operations with the help of these dogs, the sources said, adding that plans are afoot to procure Belgian Shepherd and Malinois as well.
