Bhubaneswar: Odisha has been ranked second in the country in elimination of tuberculosis (TB) in the year 2022.
The Union health ministry released the latest India TB Report 2023 in Varanasi during the ‘One world TB Summit’ on Friday.
Shalini Pandit, secretary, Health and Family Welfare, in a tweet on Saturday, said in the India TB Report 2023, Odisha has been ranked No 2 in the country, amongst major states, for progress in elimination of TB, for the year 2022. She complimented and congratulated all members of Team Health Odisha whose dedicated efforts made this possible.
Among the districts in Odisha, Puri and Sambalpur have been awarded Silver and Bronze medals respectively at the One World TB Summit by the Ministry at Varanasi for their efforts towards TB elimination.
The India TB Report mentions five risk factors – malnutrition, diabetes, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), alcohol consumption, and smoking – account for 44% of the total estimated cases of TB in the country.
In 2022, India’s TB surveillance efforts recorded a high notification of 24.2 lakh cases, an increase of 13% as compared to 2021. This translates to a case notification rate of approximately 172 cases per lakh population. The period also saw the highest private TB case notifications of 7.3 lakh achieved so far.
