Bhubaneswar: After receiving deficient showers in June, Odisha has recorded substantial rainfall so far this monsoon season, receiving 28% excess rainfall by August. No district reported deficient or scanty showers.
According to data from India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state recorded a cumulative rainfall of 1,154.3 mm between June 1 and August 31, significantly higher than the seasonal normal average.
With 1,154.3 mm of rain this monsoon as of August 31, Odisha has surpassed its normal seasonal rainfall quota nearly a month ahead of schedule. Seasonal normal rainfall quota for June-September quota for the state is 1,150.2 mm.
Meanwhile, the IMD forecast continued rainfall activity across the state in September. Northern Odisha is likely to receive normal or above-normal rainfall during the month, according to IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
The impact of low-pressure systems is also likely to continue over Odisha in September, bringing further spells of rainfall to different parts of the state.
As per the prediction, northern part of the state is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. On the other hand, southern Odisha is expected to receive less than normal rainfall.
“Odisha, so far, has experienced 25 per cent excess rainfall this season,” Mohapatra said.
Odisha is the only state in the country to have recorded above-normal rainfall this year so far, according to the weather agency.
