Bhubaneswar: The inconsistent monsoon in Odisha this year has resulted in the highest average day temperatures in July after 18 long years.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the normal average day temperature in Odisha during the month of July usually remains at 31-32 degrees Celsius.
However, going by the day temperature recorded in the last 10 days since July 25, the average day temperature remained constant at 35 degree Celsius for nine days in a row in the state with 37 degrees at some places.
Explaining the abnormal rise in the day temperature, director, Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), Sarat Chandra Sahu said that usually during the rainy season, the monsoon trough moves towards the Himalayan region.
According to him, the shifting of the trough results in the rise in the day temperature which helps the formation of the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. Due to the formation of a low-pressure, the monsoon trough from the Himalayan region moves towards the south and precipitates rain in Odisha by reactivating the monsoon.
“Though this is the normal weather process, there is a deviation this year due to the delay in the formation of low pressure resulting in the delayed southward movement of the monsoon trough from the Himalayan region,” Sahu added.
