Odisha Renames Regional Education Directorates; Scope & Powers Remain Unchanged

Bhubaneswar: In an administrative reform aimed at structural clarity, the Odisha government has officially renamed the “Regional Directorate of Education” as the “Regional Directorate of School Education”.

The Department of School and Mass Education issued a formal notification announcing the change, which applies to the regional offices situated in Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, and Brahmapur. Concurrently, the post of “Regional Director of Education” in these offices has been re-designated as “Regional Director of School Education.” This change takes effect immediately and the new nomenclature will be incorporated across all official documentation, including government records, notifications, orders, rules, manuals, service books, and correspondence.

State officials clarified that the modification is purely a change in nomenclature and will not alter the administrative scope of the offices. All existing powers, duties, functions, jurisdiction, and responsibilities associated with the regional directorates remain fully intact. Furthermore, the decision brings no changes to the service conditions, seniority, pay, allowances, or other terms governing the administrative posts.

“All references to the “Regional Directorate of Education” in any existing law, rule, regulation, notification, order, circular, guideline or instruction shall, unless the context otherwise requires, be construed as references to the “Regional Directorate of School Education”, it added.
