Odisha Sees 6th Murder On Holi As Businessman Shot Dead In Cuttack

Cuttack: A businessman was allegedly shot dead in Bayalis Mouza area of Odisha’s Cuttack district amid Holi revelry on Saturday.

As per police sources, the incident took place at Shree Krishna Vihar area under the jurisdiction of Bayalis Mouza Police Station in the district.

The deceased, identified as Bikash Mohanty, hailed from Dhenkanal. He was running a business in Nakhara area near Bayalis Mouza.

Sources said the accused, who belongs to Kendrapada, fired at Mohanty from a very close range inside a room, killing him on the spot.

After getting information about the incident, senior police officials rushed to the site and a thorough investigation was launched.

Police said the accused and Mohanty reportedly consumed liquor together in the room and the two entered into an argument over some issue. In a fit of rage, the accused opened fire killing Mohanty.

Police have detained the accused and seized the gun used in the crime, they said.

While the exact reason behind the killing is yet to be ascertained, past enmity was suspected to have led to the murder. Investigation is in progress to ascertain the motive.

Earlier, at least five persons were murdered in different places of the state amid Holi celebrations. Two of the victims were stabbed to death in state capital Bhubaneswar.
