Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will soon come out with a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the recently-announced Kanya Sumangal Yojana aimed at promoting education of girls.
Sharing this information on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said money will be deposited in the name of the girl child within one year of her birth under the new scheme.
It may be noted that Kanya Sumangal Yojana was announced by Chief Mini
ster Mohan Charan Majhi in the recent state budget speech with a dedicated budgetary allocation. The scheme aims to promote girl child education while help prevent child marriage, especially among families from economically weaker sections.
Parida, who holds Women and Child Development portfolio, said that an initial deposit will be made in the girl child’s name shortly after birth. Once the girl turns 21 or successfully completes her higher education, a substantial amount will be transferred to her account. This financial assistance is intended to ensure continuity in higher studies and reduce the economic burden on poor families.
Details regarding eligibility criteria, exact amount of deposit, application process and disbursement timeline will be made available once the official SOP is notified by the Women and Child Development Department.
